Ok, I goofed - apologies for the time wasting.
Although I built and installed a new binutils, the new version was not being
picked up (long story involving a myriad of symbolic links and Suse vs Debian
differences I should have spotted).
I can confirm that with the correctly installed current version of binutils that
I am not seeing the problem.
