HJ, your response just described your patch.  I can see what your patch does.

Please respond to this concern:

Please also explain why you think it a linker bug to complain about a reference
from a real object section that isn't being discarded to an IR symbol in the
general case, not this specific case where we happen to know (but ld itself
doesn't know) that the reference isn't used.
