I don't have time to look into this, but I'm suspicious that this  
isn't the real problem.  Why?  Because it would affect every other  
platform, and nobody else has reported this problem (including other  
people using Portage....)

Unfortunately, I won't have time to test this out until next Monday at  
the earliest.  Eric, can you...?
