They're not the same thing. This is discussed in the manual <http://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/manual/html_node/coreutils_4.html#SEC4>. Basically: KiB = kibibyte = 1024 bytes kB = kilobyte = 1000 bytes > Fog headed users by definition can't write sharp patches. But they can write useful submissions to the manual. Such submissions are one of the best ways to spur real improvements to the manual. Admittedly it takes some work, and it's not always work that you'll have time to do.
