Collapsing //file/name to /file/name violates POSIX (some systems use that notation for remote machine shared drive access). XBD 3.2 defines absolute path as "A pathname beginning with a single or more than two slashes", and XBD 4.11 agrees, so you are only allowed to collapse 3 or more leading slashes. - -- Life is short - so eat dessert first!
