I disagree.  This is one area that definitely goes back a long time.

I suggest using the standard solution of specifying the size to be
byte sized.  This produces the same output on both platforms.

  echo abcdefgh | od -t cx1
  0000000   a   b   c   d   e   f   g   h  \n
          61 62 63 64 65 66 67 68 0a
  0000011
