This is a kernel bug, fixed with this patch:

commit 755c1e20cd2ad56e5c567fa05769eb98a3eef72b
Author: Trond Myklebust <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Mon Mar 20 13:44:06 2006 -0500

NFS: writes should not clobber utimes() calls

Ensure that we flush out writes in the case when someone calls utimes() in
order to set the file times.
