I'm using Slackware-current and with ls (GNU coreutils) 6.7 broken symlinks

Yes. Try 6.9, seems to be fixed. :-)
IIRC, the "why" is because readlink() is (was) not called for a short
listing, so 'ls' doesn't (didn't) know if the symlink is valid or not.
