Known bug, and already fixed in git/CVS:

  ls -x DIR would sometimes output the wrong string in place of the
  first entry.  [introduced in coreutils-6.8]

You can wait for coreutils 6.10, convince Slackware to backport the fix to
their 6.9 package, or build a recent snapshot, such as
http://meyering.net/cu/coreutils-6.9+.tar.gz.
