IMHO, people who embed newlines into filenames deserve to lose.  But

Both of those seem silly to me, as well (though the latter less than the
former) - and yet one thing which does not seem silly, and which indeed
I have wanted on more than one occasion, seems to be adamantly
forbidden: filenames containing the directory separator.

I have heard it claimed that this is done on technical grounds, but I
have yet to hear - or, for that matter (despite some minor degree of
effort devoted to the subject over time), imagine - any technical
obstacle to this which I have not been able to come up with a
comparatively trivial way to surmount.
