Sure, but sed doesn't have the notion of a *sequence* of ranges,
so it doesn't have to worry about parsing more than one.
Compare with cut, which does.

True, I'm just saying it isn't unprecedented. A syntax that doesn't require use of my shift key for single ranges would be nice, though :-).
