What are you talking about? The info page has an entire section on this: $ info coreutils "Symbolic modes" -o - --subnodes 2>/dev/null | wc 288 1528 9654 That's a fifteen-hundred word explanation on the syntax and meaning behind symbolic modes, and there are 19 examples by my count. --help output and man pages are supposed to be short and concise.
