Perhaps you want to use the following workaround: { echo *.hhm | xargs cat; } > scop70_1.72.hhm.tmp mv scop70_1.72.hhm.tmp scop70_1.72.hhm Note that I broke the command into two steps, so that I guarantee that I'm not trying to cat the contents of scop70_1.72.hhm into itself. - -- Don't work too hard, make some time for fun as well!
