I think this may be a performance issue with your glibc, which is fixed in newer version and worked around in coreutils tests with: http://git.sv.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=coreutils.git;a=commitdiff;h=v8.24-13-gfd5f2b1 thanks, Pádraig
