You're almost certainly running into a per-process limit on the amount
of memory you can allocate.  Check your shell documentation for a
"limit" or "ulimit" command to display and change those limits.  You may
be hitting an overall system limit as well; I'd suggest asking in a Linux
group if you need more help.
