I didn't have much luck with Ubuntu and dying hard disks. All the udev/hal/automount stuff kept rattling the drive even without ddrescue doing anything, and while the machine didn't freeze for me, anything that tried to access the disk certainly did. I booted Puppy Linux from a CD and this worked a treat. I built a recent (1.8?) ddrescue from source on my Ubuntu box and put this on the external USB HD that I was using for the recovered image, and it worked fine on Puppy. Ian P.S.
