I confirmed the permission denied and hard drive turning into a raw device is an ntfs bug. I started getting the error again when the image hit 300GB, so I tried decompressing the file in windows, at which point I got a new error to google: "The requested operation could not be completed due to a file system limitation" Found this article with a promising looking hotfix after some searching: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957065 Installed it, same problem. I then tried running Diskeeper on the volume since they specifically advertise being able to defragment compressed and sparse files. It refuses to touch that file, however. I can't think of any easy or fast way to fix this now so I'm just copying the 300GB image to a spare drive and going to put it back again later. I wish I could bill Microsoft for support instead of the other way around. It's sad I've spent more time copying the image around my working drives thanks to filesystem bugs than actually recovering the data. That drive is so near death it only works at a certain angle now!
