Maybe it depends on adaptors but I have never had good results running 
ddrescue on a drive connected via USB. The drive/adaptor/whatever seems 
to get into a state where reading always returns junk data (copies of 
previous stuff?) and no error. So, ddrescue does the job but the output 
file is useless.

Connecting the drive via IDE/SATA works massively better IME.
