As direct disc mode does not have any influence in the way ddrescue
chooses single_sector/large_block reads, your finding is a strong
indication that this behaviour is caused by the kernel.
For now I think I am just going to make -d a normal option for me, as it
always seems to read faster especially through error sections.
If -d reads faster for you, then the best thing you can do is to use it. :-)
