Dear William,
if you want to make sure that certain areas of the drive are never read
(as this causes further damage to the drive) I would not rely on
predicting the recovery algorithm but rather adjust the log file.
This is probably a much more reliable approach and should be relatively
easy to do (see
http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/manual/ddrescue_manual.html#Logfile-structure
).
