I can offer an immediate alternative solution that avoids
having to put more code in to ddrescue directly. I wrote a
small tool called 'waitfordevice' (wfd) which does exactly what
you want and gives you the option for filtering for serial
numbers / product codes;

Now that ddrescue uses HDIO_GET_IDENTITY, it should be possible to
implement the functionality of 'waitfordevice' in ddrescue (even if only
for linux).
Sorry for being so slow. 'waitfordevice' is in my todo list since more
than a year ago.
