Ed.texi was later updated to incorporate Brian Kernaghan's original tutorials (with permission), and the update doesn't appear to suffer from the mentioned formatting errors. Thanks for the link. I'll use it to try to fix any remaining errors in GNU ed.texi.
There is also an updated ed.1 written in a more modern (or less obsolete?) dialect of groff
