I agree with Antonio that the POSIX standard is ambiguous in its intent of allowing empty strings as option arguments with both syntaxes (attached and detached), and with Emanuele and Paul (that empty strings should be allowed when appearing as separate argv entries by Arg_parser). The ambiguity with the POSIX standard goes beyond ed and probably needs to be brought up there for a possible edit/clarification to the Utility Argument Syntax section.
