I don't know how widely used is GNU ed today, but bug-ed is among the most active lists of the projects I maintain. Also, most of the bugs fixed and features added are reported or suggested by users. So it seems that ed users are still interested in seeing ed actively maintained.
It seems that some people prefer ed over other editors for simple line-edit tasks, for example as the editor for crontab. Ed is also useful to edit files through slow communication lines. Some people simply like ed. And, unlike many interactive editors, ed is scriptable.
BTW, if some users want to tell what they find ed useful for, I could mention those uses in the manual.
