I've modified I copy of dd to add some new options:
--count-in
--count-out
to count blocks received logarithmically. It counts: 1,2,3,.. up to 10,
then it counts 10,20,30,... up to 100, then 100,200,300 etc. I've also
added an option --timestamp which output the counts with the current date
and time. I find it useful in testing and monitoring data transfers. Is
this of general use that it or something like it should be incorporated in
to the main source?
