Your build script for 4.1.7 isn't working here. I configured it
(CFLAGS="..." ./configure --prefix=/usr), and ran
(make) 2>&1|tee make.log # bash2
Went to do something, came back 10 minutes later, it was
hung in "cat [empty]" (according to ps). It hadn't done anything
else, so that was apparently the first command that "(make)" encountered.

(I assume that gcc and binutils versions aren't relevant,
since it didn't get that far, but just for reference: gcc-2.91.66,
binutils-2.9.1.0.25.)
There may be version issues, of course, but the above
sed, perl, and gawk binaries worked fine re-compiling glibc-2.1.3
a couple of days ago (security patch).
Let me know if you want to see any of the configure output.
