For now, I would recommend editing the updatedbshell script.

Yes, that sounds right.

    In a week or two I will be contemplating replacing the current
    updatedb shell script with something else.  It'd be either another
    shell script or perhaps a binary.   

FWIW, I find it quite convenient for it to be a shell script.  This is
not the first time I've had to hack it.

    usefully be added to the Savannah bugs list so that we don't forget to
    fix it.

Ok, I'll try to add something there in a bit.
