Thanks for responding Eric, it has been quieter than I had hoped. I would have replied earlier, but first I was waiting to see if the maintainer said anything and then I was away. Obviously, perl can do most of this - the current implementation is bash, but it isn't ideal. As you say, it would be nice to code it in C. It would also be nice to have it included with xargs. Maintainers, please respond. If you don't like the idea then that's fine - I'll go away and shut up, but at least let me know.
