In principle the idea is that findutils-4.5.0 will move to a C binary
for updatedb, or at least for parts of its work.  So I'm not sure what
the optimum balance between flexibility on the one hand and
performance and robustness on the other would be.

However, did you try using the --findoptions argument to updatedb?  Or
was that unsuitable?
