The default is indeed emacs:
$ find h* -regextype posix-basic -regex '^hello.w.*' -print -quit
hello?world
$ find h* -regextype emacs -regex '^hello.w.*' -print -quit
$ find h* -regex '^hello.w.*' -print -quit
$ ls hello*
'hello'$'\n''world'
The default is set in set_option_defaults:
p->regex_options = RE_SYNTAX_EMACS;
