   and can't get gdb 4.18 to debug multithreaded progs

GDB 4.18 doesn't support debugging mutithreaded programs on Linux.
This will be possible in the next version of GDB.  If you're
adventurous you might want to try your luck with a recent snapshot.
Take a look at http://sourceware.cygnus.com/gdb.
