I originally obtained the patch from www.deja.com, but the web page is now
gone/moved. I tracked down the original posting in bug-gdb archives:

The patch installed without errors using version 2.5.4 of the patch utility
from Gnu (other postings report that patch 2.5.4 ships as "gpatch" in the
SUNWgpch package in Solaris 8.) The "patch" utility that ships with Solaris
8 refused to install the patch.

The patch fixes the following problem:
(gdb) target exec ./helloworld
(gdb) run
Starting program: ./helloworld
/proc/7656/ctl: Permission denied
/proc/7656/status: No such file or directory.
can't open process file
(gdb) $
