gdb still cannot "see" local variables in a nested C function. This is reported in PR 1195¹ and 1379².
As the reports are 5 year old by now, I'm wondering whether any work is being done on this, or if some kind of workaround exists (aside from avoiding nested functions, not an option in my current project).
