Sometimes I hear it translated literally to spanish, although I usually
hear it with this words:
«Mejor estar callado y parecer tonto que hablar y demostrarlo»
But the ready-made phrase is valid anywhere at anytime and Mark Twain's
one is old enough to be a plausible origin, at least a written one.
