I thought it would be achieved by the AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE invocation in configure.ac: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE([1.13 silent-rules parallel-tests dist-xz dist-lzip]) Perhaps it might not work with older automake? > IMO these comments should be moved to HACKING. And, if necessary, add the required version numbers there.
