I just downloaded gmp-4.2 and installed it on my machine, MacOSX 10.4.5
./configure
make
make check
sudo make install
all went well (no errors or warnings AFAICS).
But I couldn't compile the example program given in the INSTALL file:
octopus:~% gcc -g example.c -lgmp
/usr/bin/ld: truncated or malformed archive: /usr/local/lib/libgmp.a
(ranlib structures in table of contents extends past the end of the
table of contents, can't load from it)
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
octopus:~%
