Okay, since you had build the GNU backgammon before I assumed that you had msgfmt installed, it appears not to be the case. On my systems the corresponding output is
rm -f de.gmo && /usr/bin/msgfmt -c --statistics -o de.gmo de.po while yours is > rm -f de.gmo && : -c --statistics -o de.gmo de.po /usr/bin/msgfmt should be in some gettext package depending on your system.
