My config.h file didn´t have this either, I did have a VERSION symbol defined 
and backgammon.h uses this to build a VERSION_STRING.  So one of the 2 (VERSION 
and PACKAGE_VERSION) could be renamed, doesn´t make sense to have the same 
thing twice.
