Hi,

what about simply marking settings that have been changed from their
default value? For example, in Glade-3, when you change a widget
property, the label for that property is turned into bold. That way you
can see immediately the effect of clicking "Apply" or "Okay", and it is
safe to to save the changed settings, when the user leaves the dialog.
