That seems reasonable. The version numbers have been like 0.n.0 with the third part unused for ages. Maybe we could set the latter to "current" (or "devel", or whatever) in the CVS head and Michael would change that to an increasing number in the copy he would use when building binaries (plus a source snapshot).
