Python2.7 can be built on older platforms that may not come
pre-installed with it (much older versions of Centos and Fedora for
example).
CentOS 6, that can hardly be called much older and will be supported for
quite a long time, is still at Python version 2.6. CentOS 5 uses it as
well. That would probably be a better minimum.
