I have had some success with
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 gnubg
thanks to the suggestions collected in the Debian IRC channel.
The flickering stops in the GUI buttons, but there are still artefacts/
sluggish movement in the board (I have a 2d board).
Any suggestion appreciated!
