Ahh... so it does. I always use --gnulib-srcdir but had not checked the actual usage. 54MiB per cloned gnulib/ subdir is not bad at all. And when you have 5 or 10, the saved 32 MiB (size of .git/) per submodule makes a difference. Thanks for the correction.
