The cause appears to be that for GNU mktemp, the -t option does not take an argument [1]; likewise for OpenBSD mktemp [2] and Solaris mktemp [3]. Whereas for FreeBSD and NetBSD mktemp, the -t option takes an argument [4][5]. Since POSIX does not specify mktemp(1), neither of the two is "right" or "wrong". We just have to live with both.
