You're right. I missdescribed my observations...
The target of the NSMenuItem on OpenStep points to the submenu.
Just like it is in the gmodel files you have.

So of course it's clear why MacOSX needs the submenu ivar.
Are you going to implement it like OpenStep or like MacOSX ?
