Some positive feedback here - I'm still using the first version of
Kazu's patch and it works extremely well.

Im using FreeSans and all the characters come out fine - the only X app
I need to cut and paste between in Mozilla, but that works well in both
directions. Cutting and pasting all the Unicode I have tried comes out
correct in both directions.

All my tests were done with WindowMaker. The only bug I have noticed is
that gpbs does die and restart at various points. Not managed to get
it to do this when running from the command line though! It seems to
occur when I highlight some text as if I was going to copy it, but then go
and click on another window.
