Follow-up Comment #2:

I think this problem was caused by a change in the cairo API. They fixed a
long standing issue and we had to adopt our code. This was done in GNUstep
back almost half a year ago, this change is in 0.17.1 and was the main reason
for that release.

Your GNUstep packages are rather outdated could you please try newer ones or
even better GNUstep SVN? Another possibility is to switch back to an older
cairo release :-(
