Details:
On May 19, 2016 a commit was made with the comment "remove unused flag" that
remove the "-fobjc-nonfragile-abi" from the INTERNAL_OBJCFLAGS variable if the
user requested the use of non fragile abi option. My guess is that the
intention was to remove it from the INTERNAL_LDFLAGS variable (the next line
in the makefile) which would have made more sense given the comment.
But this change pretty much broke the GUI and BACKEND packages for anyone
trying to build the GNUstep libraries for use with clang and ARC. Attempting
to use the -fobjc-arc flag while compiling a GUI application results in an
executable that won't load because of a mismatched ABI configuration.
The only way to fix this is to add the "-fobjc-nonfragile-abi" flag back to
the INTERNAL_OBJCFLAGS variable in common.make and then rebuild all of the
GNUstep libraries.
See attached screen shots for the details of the commit that broke this.
