Anyways, I can't believe the mighty grep got along all these, what, 40 years, without a way to say 'find me a null' or 'hex 04' without being forced to feed it raw characters. OK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grep says there are many versions, so no wonder GNU grep doesn't act like a 40 year-old. Anyway, raw characters would still be OK: but then mainly say this is indeed needed on the man page.
