With that kind of low-quality non-portable input poking deeply into implementation details of the formatter instead of using man(7) macros like a manual page should, it's not surprising that you run into lots of formatter-dependent misformatting and into lots of compatibility issues - both going from one formatter to another and going from one release to the next of the same formatter.
